Should I Upgrade to Windows 11?
Should I Upgrade to Windows 11? In my opinion the answer is YES and NO. And here is why:
YES, you should Upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10
- Every new Windows operating system (OS) has been built on the back of the best bits of the OS it is replacing.
- the New OS, Windows 11 is built for the prevailing IT environments, for example the big increase in the number remote workers.
- Before the 2020 Covid pandemic most businesses’ IT network security was based on the Office perimeter but the enforced work from home meant that companies had to rapidly deploy solutions that enabled their employees to work away from the traditional office.
- Suddenly the IT networks became more distributed such that security was now placed on the user and device they were using to access company resources.
- For example, one of the requirements of Windows 11 is to have TPM 2.0 enabled on the device which provides features such as bank level encryption. for more details on TPM see this article.
- Installing Windows 11 now gives you the opportunity to get familiar with some of the new features that can help you do more in a given time.
- Being able to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free won’t last forever, so take advantage of this benefit while it exists.
If you have a spare PC that you can use as your Test PC, then by all means go ahead and install Windows 11 even if you have to use work arounds.
NO, you shouldn’t Upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10
Although Microsoft are offering free upgrade from licensed Windows 10 to Windows 11 at present, it’s tempting to proceed with upgrading especially if your PC meets the Windows 11 requirements.
However, in my opinion you shouldn’t upgrade your Windows 10 OS at this time especially if this is the PC you use daily for your work or anything important to you.
Here are my reasons for not upgrading right now.
- If your PC hardware was manufactured before 2016, it’s most likely it would not match Windows 11 requirements and the only way to upgrade would be to take some of the work rounds to install Windows 11.
- You can find the CPU and TPM work around on this article but you won’t be supported by Microsoft as they have said you do this at your own risk.
- Also going forward your system may not receive security updates which can expose your PC to all the threats out there.
- Windows 10 was officially released in October 2015 and Microsoft have a 10-year support for most of its products. Meaning Windows 10 is going to be supported with security updates until October 2025. that’s for more years from October 2021.
- Windows 10 works well today and you can always update after most of the bugs have been identified and fixed.
- If your PC is mission critical, then it’s best to keep using Windows 10 for a while.
